I sure wish Cashman had a trade up his sleeve for a 3B. We always seem to fall short in at least one position. I was against a trade for McMahon as he strikes our a lot and offensive stats for players coming from Rockies are always suspect. When i saw he batted lefty, i thought maybe 25 homers at YS and .240-250. Alec Bohm batting average higher. I dont know much about their defensive attributes. My wish would be to somehow trade for Brendan Donovan but have no idea if he is available and what he would cost but i would definitely be willing to give up some good players/prospects for him. Finally, Arraez definitely can provide on base ability ahead of Judge. He would also cost some good prospects but i am tired of holding on to prospects who never amount to much. Donovan would be worth it. Maybe Arraez a bit less. Are any of these guys available? I always liked Peraza. He might turn out to be good offensively, if the Yankees were willig to stick with hime for 2-3 months of consistent play. Also, why do I keep reading that Yanks are close to signing Tanner Scott when they have such a glairing weakness at third and bullpen is heading to being strong.
Giving Cabrera the 3B job, as most SPs are RHPs, is risky as he is the primary backup at a whole bunch of spots except catcher. Cashman and his guys decided they didn't like Peraza during the first half of 2022, so I don't get it. Peraza would end up playing more than they'd like.
Would Cashman & Co. let Escarra fight for the 3B job if no one else is added to the roster?
I don't know how Escarra is at 3B, but I would they let him flght for the job?
As of right now I have Ben Rice being the backup catcher, and he would get most of the starts at 1B in place of Goldschmidt, but you did openly bring up my concern of having Cabrera as a starter at one position.
I think Escarra is a much better defensive catcher than Rice. The scouting reports were pretty down on Rice as a catcher, but the same is true of Wells. We'll see when we get a few more reports on Escarra this offseason.
This is more from what I've seen, than any data sheet, or whatever. I thought Wells's biggest issue in the minors was his scatter shot arm. One time a perfect throw, the next throw, a wet noodle arm. I thought Rice was infinitely the better defensive catcher than ex-teammates Augustin Ramirez, and it wasn't close. Escarra is just competent looking to me wherever he plays on the diamond.
But we both know that the backup catcher will be whoever Cashman & his cronies like, or want. If it was up to me, for as the roster is right now, my choice right now is Rice is the leader in the clubhouse.
I think that the understanding before 2024 was that Narvaez > Ramirez > Wells >>>> Rice.
I can't find a decent scouting report on Escarra other than a report out of te Mexican League calling him the "complete package" back when he was slugging a billion there. I think he would have to be pretty good for the Yankees to trade Narvaez and Trevino ahead of him.
I told you what I thought about certain guys defensively, and 2024 didn't change my opinion on Ramirez or Rice, before Ramirez was traded away, in fact Ramirez was worse, and bad at both C and 1B. Wells proved me right, and I really don't have a positive or negative rating on Escarra's defensive abilities.
But again, the backup catcher will come down to who Cashman & HIS guys want IMHO. Who Boone, or the coaching staff want means very little or nothing, and very little just left the premises.
McMahon grew up 15 minutes from here and would be a good fit defensively.

It would make it harder to rest Goldschmidt against a tough righty.
No idea how good Escarra is at 3rd.
