Not yet. He is not quite ready. Still too many pitches. But if he has another good start tomorrow night, then I gotta think about starting him next Monday or Tuesday in Toronto. But that also means pitching at least tonight's SP, Rodón, on 4 days rest, Sunday against the A's. But then I'd move Stroman to the 60 day to make 40 man roster room.
Unless there is the potential that some team would actually trade for Stroman, I wouild DFA him. Schlittler should be given the chance. What good is developing pitchers if they are not used when they are needed. Why not have salary controlled young pitchers in the rotation.
While Schlittler might be seen as the best option right now for the 5th Starter spot, I'd give Brubaker a shot right now. But I have Schlittler behind Hil, and unless Schlittler has some Sterling Hitchcock in him, I don't want to ruin his development.
To explain Hitchcock: One Spring while still a prospect, he challenged George verbally so while he was still in AA, he got promoted to do a spot start on a Friday night in July of that year. He pitched a very solid 7 innings. With that behind him, and being part of the 1995 rotation that got Cap (Mattingly) into the playoffs, I was surprised that George let him be traded. I thought both he and Pettitte were going to be here for the next 5 years.
Results from tonight: Schlittler pitched 6 innings and did not allow a run . He gave up one hit and struck out 9. I would say he is ready for a shot in the majors.
Schlittler is a no brainer in my opinion. We can still use Winans and Brubaker as backup if it doesn't work out. The trade deadline is near and the Yanks need to look at improving the bullpen and finding and infielder who can hit better than Peraza and play average to above defense. Most of the good ones are on teams who will likely make the playoffs.
